Appliances not intended for normal household use but which nevertheless may be a source of danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used by laymen in shops, in light industry and on farms, are within the scope of this standard.
This standard deals with the reasonably foreseeable hazards presented by appliances that are encountered by all persons. However, in general, it does not take into account: – persons (including children) whose
• physical, sensory or mental capabilities; or
• lack of experience and knowledge prevents them from using the appliance safely without supervision or instruction; – children playing with the appliance.
Additional requirements may be necessary for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft. In many countries, additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, the national authorities responsible for the protection of labour, the national water supply authorities and similar authorities.

This part of IEC 61558 deals with the safety of safety isolating transformers for general applications and power supply units incorporating safety isolating transformers for general applications. Transformers incorporating electronic circuits are also covered by this document.
NOTE 1 Safety includes electrical, thermal and mechanical aspects.
Unless otherwise specified, from here onward, the term transformer covers safety isolating transformers for general applications and power supply units incorporating safety isolating transformers for general applications.
For power supply units (linear) this document is applicable. For switch mode power supply units IEC 61558-2-16 is applicable.
This document is applicable to stationary or portable, single-phase or polyphase, air-cooled (natural or forced) independent or associated dry- type transformers. The windings can be encapsulated or non-encapsulated.
The rated supply voltage does not exceed 1 000 V AC and the rated supply frequency and the internal operating frequencies do not exceed 500 Hz.
The rated output does not exceed:
• 10 kVA for single-phase transformers;
• 16 kVA for polyphase transformers.
This document is applicable to transformers without limitation of the rated output subject to an agreement between the purchaser and the manufacturer.
NOTE 2 Transformers intended to supply distribution networks are not included in the scope.
The no-load output voltage or the rated output voltage does not exceed 50 V AC or 120 V ripple-free DC.
This document is not applicable to external circuits and their components intended to be connected to the input terminals and output terminals of the transformers.
NOTE 3 Transformers covered by this document are used in applications where double or reinforced insulation between circuits is required by the installation rules or by the end product standard.
Attention is drawn to the following:
• additional requirements for transformers intended to be used in vehicles, on board ships, and aircraft (from other applicable standards, national rules, etc.);
• measures to protect the enclosure and the components inside the enclosure against external influences such as fungus, vermin, termites, solar-radiation and icing;
• the different conditions for transportation, storage, and operation of the transformers;
• additional requirements in accordance with other appropriate standards and national rules can be applicable to transformers intended for use in special environments.

This International Standard applies to cable reels for a.c. only, provided with a non-detachable flexible cable with a rated voltage above 50 V and not exceeding 250 V for single-phase cable reels and above 50 V and not exceeding 440 V for all other cable reels, and a rated current not exceeding 16 A. They are intended for household, commercial and light industrial and similar purposes, either indoors or outdoors, with particular reference to safety in normal use.
Cable reeling devices incorporated in appliances are under consideration.
Cable reels complying with this standard are suitable for use at ambient temperatures not normally exceeding 25 °C, but occasionally reaching 35 °C. In locations where special conditions prevail, special construction may be required.
NOTE – This standard does not apply to cable reels with a detachable flexible cable.

Clause 1 of IEC 61058-1:2016 is applicable except as follows:
Addition: This document applies to cord switches (mechanical or electronic) for appliances actuated by hand, by foot or by other human activity, to operate or control electrical appliances and other equipment for household or similar purposes with a rated voltage not exceeding 250 V and a rated current not exceeding 16 A. Throughout this document, the word “appliance” means “appliance or equipment”.
These switches are intended to be operated by a person, via an actuating member or by actuating a sensing unit. The actuating member or sensing unit can be integral or arranged separately from the switch. The transmission of a signal between the actuating member or sensing unit and the switch can be made either physically or electrically (for example, electrical, optical, acoustic or thermal). Switches which incorporate additional control functions governed by the switch function are within the scope of this document.
This document also covers the indirect actuation of the switch when the operation of the actuating member or sensing unit is provided by a remote control or a part of an appliance such as a door.
NOTE 1 Electronic switches can be combined with mechanical switches giving full disconnection or micro-disconnection.
NOTE 2 Electronic switches without a mechanical switch in the supply circuit provide only electronic disconnection. Therefore, the circuit on the load side is always considered to be live.
NOTE 3 For switches used in tropical climates, additional requirements can apply.
NOTE 4 Attention is drawn to the fact that the standards for appliances can contain additional or alternative requirements for switches.
